DescriptionAny day I can add a nice example of H.T. Webster's The Timid Soul to my collection is a good day. And this is a particularly sweet panel. Published on September 15, 1930, Two "intellectual" types are fawning over a Brancusi-type sculpture, with Casper agreeing fully, even though he doesn't know what he's agreeing two. Since the 1913 Armory Exhibition in New York City, cartoonists poked fun at "modern" art, even though there were a number of cartoonists with work in that exhibition. Harold Gray used to show these types of "intellectuals" in a similar fashion, with very toothy expressions. I love Webster's line work, as well as the exaggerated figure on the left side.Social/Sharing |

The class divide is going to be just as wide as it was in the 1930's. Artwork literacy and honest discourse will also take a dive.
