Description
"The Nazis Meet Billy the Kid" by unknown writer. Cover date September 1972.

I read this issue as a kid. War meets Western comic! "When he enlisted in Arizona, Luke Andrews wanted to fight the Germans, but the young cowboy never did get to see the Nazis face to face...All he saw were machines...And that, to his way of thinking was no way to fight a war!" Story begins with him blowing up a tank by putting a slug down the cannon's barrel!

This piece is my only Charlton war cover. I don't mind that someone inked the cover with markers post-production, which is confirmed by the colors of the published cover. Markers are well done except clumsy brown marker lines over inked ground and sandbag textures. Back is stamped with Don Perlin's name and address.

Writer likely swiped the idea from the 1966 movie, "Billy the Kidd Versus Dracula." Dracula was played by famous character actor John Carradine, who is among the most prolific English-speaking film and television actors with 351 film and television credits including John Ford's classic Westerns "Stagecoach" and "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" with John Wayne (Wikipedia).

I think there's so much more blank space in the original art than we realize than in the published comic, that the colors here isn't a dealbreaker.

The covers were never al lthat expensive, so from a collecting standpoint, I personally would not have refused to buy this one because of the coloring. The overall World War II meets the Old West motif provides more than enough reason to get past the fact it was colored and add it to the collection anyway. Really neat to see something so early by Perlin but not from Marvel!

Thanks, Rubén! I also liked that it was early, non-Marvel Perlin.

The matchup we never expected. Nazis facing down the six-shooters of the Old West! What a FUN cover to what seems to be a fun story.

Congratulations on landing this one!
