Description
When I attended SVA from 2000-2002 Marshall was the head of the department. When I would visit him in his office, he didn't have much on the walls, at least that I remember, but he did have this one drawing of a wino eating out of a can. The drawing was pretty simple and crude, but has this super realistic and clean drawing of a can opener. That level of drawing and precision was unusual for his work as he painted with his hands and draw with broken bits of comb. It was always a piece I would stop and stare at, and the juxtaposition was captivating. ( I added a pic of it in the extra images.) When I asked him about it, Marshall used to say give them something to stare at ie the can opener.
So when this Wino drawing came up for auction, which I am pretty sure is of the same series, I bid big on it. That drawing of the dog and bottle has the same juxtaposition and captivating qualities as the other drawing. A small digital pic doesn't do this justice as the original is big- 22x30, and yes this whole thing was drawn with a comb.
Enjoy

Awesome Arisman example!  Congrats on finding something so close to what you remember of his work when you studied with him.  The drawing style certainly evokes an era.  Would love to see more of his work on CAF

thanks sent you a message. I'm glad I found a piece so similar too. Marshall said animals have knowledge, clearly this piece shows that.

The style itself is more from the impressionist line art tradition to evoke mood.  The slouched over man is like he gave all his life force to the dog.
