The first panel has great traditional Japanese landscape artistry to set the tone and the contrast makes the cartooning feel more expressive and fluidly animated. They combine to bring together the old and new ways of storytelling.
I couldn't say it better!
I love the inking on the mountains and the juxtaposition between that and the otherwise cartoony approach!
Mizuki is a giant and you've got a page from his signature character with a dash of color, so it's hard to beat.
(I tried to get into GeGeGe as a young adult and it was too simple for me and not as charming as I thought it would be. However, Nononba has become a mandatory reading for me, so I should retry it)
Fantastic orignal art!
Excellent stuff! that mountain landscape scene setting panel to open is just incredible. congrats on adding such a top notch Kitaro example from Mizuki.
The landscape, of course, beautiful, but also panels 1 & 2, and the whole riot of circular shapes: that disorienting scary whimsical mysterious cartoon uncanny... it's just a perfect example. One of my favorite pages in your collection, and that's saying something.
That is amazing! I'm not familiar with this artist, but I should get some of his books. Love the mashup of a cartoony character with intricate and atmospheric landscapes, plus some totally black backgrounds. There's a lot going on here
Well done Jeff. Beautiful page.
