Description

Hanneke is confused by her dreams and by Harlan's claims of fighting monsters. She sees the golden miniature that Nikolaus brought to the bookstore earlier while she was comatose:

“That object! It wasn't here yesterday, I'm sure of it. Who brought it here? It's beautiful!” (In the close-up, we see that the golden box is decorated by the dragon, angels, and demons from Hanneke’s nightmare. Probably shouldn’t put a metal-legged box on an antique book though.)

“Don't touch it!”

“Why? Aaah! It's... It's hot! And the dragon figure seems to be moving under my fingers!”

“It's an ancient gold snuffbox, but it could be dangerous. I asked Nikolaus to leave it here so I could examine it.”

“Nikolaus? A friend of yours?”

“A good friend. He's the one who gave me Kavka.”

“And is there another unbelievable story connected to this object?”

“That's what we're trying to find out. It was forged by an 18th-century craftsman, Jérôme Sombre, the magical goldsmith, magician and charlatan, in the style of Cagliostro and Saint-Germain.”

“Interesting. And how did your friend get it?”

“Savnok, a demon, gave it to him.”

“A... what?”

“A demon. As much as it pains me to admit it, Nikolaus also belongs to that lineage. He and Savnok believe that Sombre has come back to Prague.”

“Now? A goldsmith who lived three centuries ago?”

“Sombre signed some kind of infernal contract. He pursues me on behalf of his lord, the Master of the Night, Nergal, a demon and super-vampire.”

“Okay, that's enough! Now I'm going upstairs, packing my suitcase, and going home!”

Just like that birdcage, the box has plenty within that keeps us trapped within this mystery!

The background hatchwork is as intriguing as the main characters.

Hanneke's had enough and I don''t blame her but what's truly in the Faustian snuffbox!!?? This is starting to become a real page turner!
