Description

If you�re of a certain age and lived in a certain metropolitan area, you know him. No need to see his uniform number, team logo or pinstripes.

A hero to many, Thurman Munson was the first captain of the New York Yankees since Lou Gehrig.

Other than that, I can�t quote any of Munson's stats� heck, I haven�t even followed baseball in decades.

I will just leave it to Jay Busbee, writing for Yahoo! Sports, on the eve of the 40th anniversary of Thurman Munson's death in the middle in the 1979 season, he wrote:

What he was, was the lead dog on the most alpha-laden team in the most alpha-obsessed city in the country.

Thanks to Mark who perfectly captured one of his favorite players.

PS - For the Baseball 100 Kickstarter art reward, I asked Mark for Lou Gehrig. I was saving my Thurman Munson request for this commission.

There needs to be more of this artist out there. Somebody gives this man six issues of literally anything he wants. Batman. Baseball. Batman playing baseball. This is a fantastic piece.

Chiarello does great work and this is a very cool tribute piece to a baseball legend.

This is brilliant! Granted, I was born in the Bronx and vivdly remember sitting on my family's living room floor and watching the Yankees win the 1977 and 1978 World Series with Thurman behind the plate...so I'm a little biased :)
