Description

A recent conversation in London with David Wright's sole surviving son, Paul (older brothers Nicky & Patrick have passed), revealed that his father painted landscapes as a form of relaxation. Given the detail involved involved in his fashion, advertising and illustration work (coupled with the fact that most of that was produced while hunched over a drafting table in a studio), it's easy to understand how being outside and playing with form, light and color while apart from the client constraints of his day job would be a necessary departure & break for Wright.

This piece is among three in watercolor that all look to have been completed during a May 1945 trip to the countryside.

Beautiful. I can imagine that, getting out of the studio and painting outdoors would have been very welcome to David. Everyone needs a little time in nature just to replenish oneself.

Wright was wise to do these pressure relief exercises. Constant deadlines and long hours put the commercial artist at a high risk for burnout.

Nice batch of Wright landscapes, thanks for sharing the background on them as well. They have a relaxing effect on the viewer as much as they presumably did on the artist!

Wright discovered the healing properties of painting happy little trees way before PBS came into being.
