Chienlock Holmes Derrière Arsène Lapin by Edmond-François Calvo

I must admit I didn’t know who Calvo was even 5 years ago. He had a big exhibition at Angouleme one of the years I didn't go but I have the catalog. From there he has been on my radar. At the big Pompidou comic art exhibition in 2023 he was well represented and I got exposed to his genius. A French Disney. I will keep this short but a lot of politics and editorialism came through in his work, especially around WWII in "La Bête est Morte" in which Nazis were portrayed as wolves and the French as bunnies. This page is from 1949 and the same era as his most famous work. As the title suggests, he is having a bit of fun with two famous detectives. I like how clean and expressive his work is and it reminds me of comics from the 1920's and 30's. I may not be a fan of funny animal cartoons but his skill is so evident here.
