Description
I’ll look but I won’t buy anything.

That’s pretty much my mantra every time another CAF Live rolls around. I don’t think I’ve ever let one go by without at least looking. But I usually pretty much just fly through it when I do (basically about as fast as each page will load on my computer). When I’m going at such a fast clip, it takes a lot to stop me in my tracks. This piece did just that.

I absolutely love everything about this one. Not the least of which is that it comes from such an unexpected source. Well actually, TWO unexpected sources. I’d be lying if I told you that getting a nice Geof Isherwood piece was high on my priority list (or even on my radar at all). Don’t get me wrong. I have all the respect in the world for Geof’s skill as an artist. But the Isherwood box was never one I was desperate to check. Still, every single time I look at this piece, I’m so glad I took the time to browse CAF Live that day.

Now I don’t know about the rest of you, but as soon as I saw this image, I knew immediately what it reminded me of. The classic BWS page 1 splash to Avengers #100 (see Additional Images, HI Kirk). I have no idea if the piece is indeed a homage to that splash, or even if that influenced Isherwood in any way while he was working on this. When I reached out to Geof (I know, I should have brought up the BWS then) he told me it was an old commission piece. So maybe the person who commissioned it asked him to do something based on the Avengers splash. Who knows? All I know is that when I saw it, I just could not stop staring at it. But eventually I was able to pick my jaw up from the keyboard to send my purchase request to the seller.

Again, I just love everything about this piece. To start, the composition is stunning. I mean, what a spectacularly powerful and glorious image. I’m not some huge Black Knight fan, but it’s hard to imagine a more perfect shot of Dane Whitman and Aragorn. The linework and detail are exquisite. The colors are rich and vibrant without being garish. And talk about a full and extensive background. Geof did not skimp on this piece at all. I’m surprised he even had any room left to fit his signature in. Ha!

My thanks to CAF’s own Larry (Galac)Tun for this incredible piece. When I stumbled upon his booth, his seller name was Need More Sleep. So imagine my surprise when I found out it was him (hence the other unexpected source). I’ve had the pleasure of dealing with Larry before and even had the honor of having him at the house for a visit (see Additional Images). Anyone who knows Larry knows he’s one of the good guys. And if you don’t know him, you should. My thanks also to Geof Isherwood for letting me bug him with all my questions (even if I did forget to ask about the BWS thing). And while I’m doling out kudos, I guess I should thank Bill for another successful CAF Live. If not for him and the show, I wouldn’t have this wonderful piece to share with you all. Speaking of which, thanks to all of you for visiting my little corner of the hobby. Your continued support is much appreciated. Chow for now.

This has BWS vibes for sure, but also takes from Isherwood's influences of Prince Valiant.

My Biggest takeaway: Larry was allowed to handle the art!

Very nice!  And the only way not to buy...is not to look...which is heartbreaking!  ;)

Larry has so many great pieces still hiding in fedex boxes, its amazing you were able to get this masterpiece. Truly a thing of beauty. Makes me sad the Black Knight movie with Kit Harrington never came to be. Congrats again!

Ha!  That explains a lot.  We did a big trade deal some years back and I have never seen him post any of those pieces.  They're probably sitting in some closet still in the original unopened shipping package.  LOL

Anyone that can draw a horse is alright with me.  And in general, Isherwood is very underappreciated.

It's funny you say that because I think some of our greatest comic artists (past and present) don't know how to draw animals.  And we've all seen it.  Whether it's a wolf, a lion, a bear, a shark, or whatever.  It's almost like they had never seen one before.  Haha!  But yeah, Aragorn definitely steals the show here.  Heck, even if Dane wasn't sitting there, I STILL might have bought this.

That's gorgous!  I hope you checked Larry's backpack for any "accidental grabs" on his way out!

His next stop was to pick up his Art Adams piece, so he needed all the room in his backpack for that.   And the only reason I let him hold that Mignola poster is because I knew it was way too big to fit in his backpack.  LOL

That's a great (Dane Whitman) Black Knight image! Marcus called it right with the Prince Valliant influence, and this is such a classic pose with Aragorn. Lovely pick-up. (It reminds me, I must put up a Dane Whitman page of mine this week.)

Your CAF Live searching/browsing skills must be better than mine because I never even saw this piece even though I'm pretty sure I saw Larry's booth, funny how that works right ha! But a very visually arresting Black Knight piece by Isherwood regardless, nice grab!

Hey Buddy- so, the complete story, is I commissioned this with Geoff as I was doing the Avengersa 100 project with him starting back in 2009. We got this one, Ant Man, Swordsmen, Hawkeye, and Hercules done. All in the BWS flavor. Hercules was the last one around 2012. I wanted to keep going and have the whole team represented individually, but I sold one of the pieces and I am not sure if that is why Geoff didn't want to continue or he just lost interest in the project. I was really looking forward to Thor, but he never got done, so I gave up. Geoff did excellent work on all of them, yet Black Knight was my favorite. I'll send you images of ther other pieces in a direct email. So gl;ad you have this one!!

Wow!  Thanks for that super cool insight.  Can't wait to see those other four pieces you mentioned.  Your Avengers 100 commission idea sounds like a total dream project.  What a fantastic idea.  Although I have to admit to being torn between having individual pinups of each character, or just have Geof do his version of that phenomenal DPS.  Just based on this Black Knight piece, I'm sure he would've just crushed that.  And like you, even trying to imagine what the Thor piece would have looked like makes me wish that had materialized.  So sad.  Anyway, thanks SO MUC for completing the backstory for this incredible piece.  I'm just so sorry that your dream project was never completed.  But I think there's one thing that everyone will agree on.  Just absolutely beautiful work by Geof.
