Description

I've always loved Steve Ditko's artwork and I'm happy to add another page to my collection. One of the later projects he did at Marvel was the Phantom 2040 mini-series in 1995, which was based on the animated series (which was pretty good by the way). Ditko was still doing quality work here and just check out the crazy bottom panel (but don't make yourself too crazy trying to understand the dialogue). This page is signed by inker Bill Reinhold, who did a really nice job on this series. Sadly it looks like much of Ditko's art disappeared and may have been destroyed, so what's out there is primarily art from his inkers, earlier art that "escaped" from the publishers offices, or some of his later independent art which I believe was in the possession of his frequent publisher Robin Snyder. I guess we'll have be thankful that at least some of these pages still exist.

Big thanks to Bill Reinhold for the scan of Ditko's original pencils.

Not only is this good, but it's like Ditko never looked better. I look forward to the day that Bill Reinhold sees this and replies, so that we can know if the reason the Phantom figure in the bottom panel looks so modern and dynamically posed, is because he sort of "fixed" it to look like that. Because as we all know, even intothe 90's, Ditko's poses always had quite a quirkiness to them. What say you, Bill, did you embellish that figure to make it look more dynamic and less quirky? Either way, fabulous stuff with losts of energy!

Ruben, I looked around and found the xerox of those pencil breakdowns. I inked on all of the originals. I wish CAF let you post an image to a comment, but all I can do is provide a link. I'll let you be the judge of whether I made it more "dynamic and less quirky". To the best of my ability I followed Ditko's inking style without truly redrawing. Just embellishing.

Very cool!  Thanks for posting the pencils!  You definitely kept the essence of Ditko's pencils while adding a lot of detail.

Wow, this is so great to see! Thanks so much for taking the time to find the xerox, Bill, it's much appreciated. I have to give credit to Ditko, because he clearly established the basic poses for all the figures and he definitely left the quirkiness out of the figure in question. But it's also great to see the Xerox because it shows that while all the figure placement and poses are all pretty solidly set in stone and can't be changed without erasing and redrawing, it also allows the viewer to see that he left all the light sources and rendering completely up to you, and you really did a magnificent job with it. Kudos!

Glad you appreciate it Ruben! His breakdowns were really  solid.  Looked like much of the work he ever did. A fun way to work with another artist, but crazy intimidating with Ditko! Fortunately he gave me a positive review. Feel free to add his pencils to your post.

Pretty timeless!  Full of those great effects he used to do for his Doctor Strange and other magic characters!

Late Ditko, but still full of his wild imagination. Interesting page.

Never read this one but damn that's a cool Ditko page, might have to go seek this out and give it a shot. Congrats on the page!
