Description
In the past 5 to 6 years I have really gotten into the art of Attilio Micheluzzi. I had a few pieces for many years but I didn't know what I was really looking for as I had not seen any of his work translated. A few reprints, an exhibition and more exploration took me to where I am today, more well versed in his art and knowing what I want in a page. Skip forward to last month. I was in Turin visiting my long time friend Max and two friends, both named Gio, met us. We went to visit the collection of two very prominent and important Italian comic art collectors who also happen to be brothers. At the second of the two places, I saw this Micheluzzi on the wall. I had seen probably 60 Micheluzzis earlier in the day and they were gorgeous but I have 3 nice pages already and didn't think I needed another until I saw this on the wall. I was love at first site. I saw some incredible art on the trip but this was the one that left the biggest impression. My adoration of Micheluzzi's art was apparent which prompted the collector to call Micheluzzi'a widow and tell her that they had a Canadian over who loved his work. I took a picture of it and it wasn't until I was home that I reached out to thank the collector for the visit and reiterated my love for the piece. I quietly asked if he would consider selling it. We talked a bit and considered a trade but in the end he gave me a price that I was happy to pay.

For me, as a Terry and the Pirates lover, I only see a homage to Caniff here but in Micheluzzi's style. Every panel is great but the Chinese junks are amazing. I like how he tilts the horizon in his work and the use of sounds as visual language and this page had that too. I could gush on about this page for a while but I'll let the art do most of the talking.

When I first saw this page, my first thought somehow was that it was European in style and origin. This is an approach that is quite different from that in American comics and quite refreshing. An excellent page and many congrats, Jeff!

The art most certainly is doing the talking here - more like yelling, it's so good! What a stunning piece of visual storytelling - way to put another beauty from this artist in your already amazing collection!
