Description
Ordinarily, I’d start by explaining what is happening story wise in the issue – and for Gerber Defenders issues, that can be quite complicated. But given that the Hulk has taken storytelling into his own hands on this page, and as this really is more of a Hulk rage page than a Defenders page, I’ll make it simple.

Hulk doesn’t like the police. Hulk doesn’t like being shot at. Hulk doesn’t like noise. The police are in the helicopter. The police are shooting at the Hulk. The helicopter is noisy. Hulk SMASH helicopter!

And who better than Sal to show the Hulk in destructive mode? In this part of the run, Sal is credited with breakdowns, but given how much we can see of his style those breakdowns must have been quite detailed. Klaus finished the job, with those lovely detailed and scratchy inks.

Ha ha! Yes, it can be confusing, and I end up not being sure what folder to put a page in. Thanks, Mario!

Love the vertical 6 panel layout here. The action is perfectly framed in each.

Thanks Tyler. It's a good point about the framing. With so little space, Sal did something very different in each panel.

Maximum carnage!  Hulk smashes helocopters as much as Wolverine beats ninjas.

Ha ha! Thanks, James - Hulk and Wolverine take on ninjas in helicopters is the Marvel team-up we never knew we needed.

Thanks - me too, sadly. This one came autographed when I bought it, and I have quite a few that Sal autographed. Shame not to have met my favourite artist.

An entire battalion of helicopters wouldn't stand a chance against Hulk! Such a cool looking Sal B Hulk sequence. I really enjoy seeing pages built around a vertical 6-panel layout.

Thanks, Kavi! The best hope always seems to be that the Hulk gets bored and moves on.

Thanks! Yes, the layouts are regular, same size panels, but Sal does something very different in each one.

Great page from my favorite team book.  As with his glorious Hulk run, Sal had a variety of inkers on Defenders (four different inkers in the first five issues alone - ten in the first twenty).  While my favorite on his Hulk run was Joe Staton, for Defenders I would have to go with Janson.  Issue #19 with the Wrecking Crew is probably one of my single favorite art issues of the entire Defenders run (I would kill for that opening splash).  This is a banger of Buscema/Janson page with Hulk in almost every panel.  Congrats on this stunning example.

Thanks! Yes, the art in Defenders #19 was impressive, and I'm still looking out for a page from that one. That was also the team I first saw on the Defenders - #15. I'm with you on Staton-inked Sal on the Hulk!

What fun!  Hulk smash most pages I've seen.  Janson's inks at this point were ridiculously great.

Janson on Sal is always a treat. Janson was Sal's best inker and this page is no exception.

I wonder whether that ever gets factored in for those in-comic fictional budgets. "Tax receipts $10 billion, Hulk -$5 billion...". And what happens in a Hulk plus Godzilla month?

Janson is so good that almost everything he touches becomes ...Janson. He gave a lot of depth and nuance to Sal's clean pencils. Great example !

Incredible second paragraph description. This is a sensational six-panel Sal page, and is there any penciller or breakdown artist who Klaus Janson did not make look good?

Well, Hulk doesn't like a lot of people and things and stuff... but he should like this page and thank Sal Buscema and Klaus Janson for such a dynamic portrayal, surely quite faithful to his ordinary state of mind!

Every one of the 6 evenly sized panel's has got something to see!  Smashing page, indeed.  Congrats!
