I loved how illustrator Dave Rapoza drew this (in full color) for Ghost Rider #12, so i wanted to pay tribute and do a monochrome version of it. This Ghost Rider piece felt like Johnny Blaze was literally combusting off the board. His exposed teeth, stretched jaw, and hollow eye sockets pushed the image closer to horror illustration than traditional superhero art. The chains were treated almost like a halo framing the skull, while the smoke and flame shapes were kept loose and organic to contrast against the sharper rendering of the leather spikes and bone structure.
I’ve always loved how Ghost Rider works best when he feels dangerous and tragic at the same time — not just a flaming skull on a motorcycle, but a cursed spirit barely holding itself together.
