"Are You Ready For the World That's Coming" Story Page 11

Been on a bit of a Paul Pope scanning kick. Pope does covers well but his interiors are where his storytelling and power are on full display. In 2005, Paul did an issue of Solo for DC. Around this time, Mark Chiarello was leading groundbreaking work like Solo and Wednesday Comics where creators were able to do very innovative and expressive work with DC characters. Pope had a number of short stories in this issue, and one of them was a tribute/re-telling of OMAC #1 by the King, Jack Kirby. It wasn't a panel for panel, page for page retelling but Pope did an incredible job updating the issue for the 21st Century and allowing fans to experience it through his lens.

This is page 11 of Pope's story which corresponds to page 16 in Kirby's original book. It features the birth of OMAC as he has just been zapped by Brother Eye to transform. Pope uses the same panel layout as Kirby with some adjustments to the bottom 2 panels. He really makes the scene pop with maximum destruction and power. Loved it, as we get the fantastic image of OMAC appearing and the total shock and awe from his former co-workers as he goes ballistic.

I love how much Paul shows his respect for Kirby in his work and whenever he has an opportunity to pay homage. I really believe there hasn't been an artist since Kirby that is able to visually express power, weight, and energy to his characters as much as Pope is able to. Truly a master of the medium, having done it all at the Big 2 and independently.

Pope makes Omac very contemporary while still having the outsider feel.   The storytelling is always cool putting all those effects in there that we won't see elsewhere in covers nor pin ups.

Yes, Marcus. Pope does some great covers but he brings something else on those interiors.

I may not have seen all that many Pope interiors, but this may actually be the nicest, most impressive Pope panel page I've ever seen! Everything about it is "WOW!"

Really wild action on this page! Yes, there's Kirby, but the swirling effects in the fourth panel feel quite different - and hyper dynamic. So interesting to see.

That's such a freaking cool looking Paul Pope page dude! I keep rockin back and forth between the scan and the original Kirby. Back and forth. Back and forth. And again. And again. Granted I'm layed up and out of it like a mofo after surgeries but hell yeah this is the type of thing my eyes needed for a little jolt! Congrats!
