Description

Surprise!  Another Legionnaires page!  This one wasn't a pickup from Jeff's recent art drop, but it's a followup to one of the pages I did get from the drop, also from issue 54.

In this issue, several Legionnaires are plucked through time back to the 1940s and given both alternate memories and reduced versions of their powers.  Their adventures mirror many tropes of the actual Golden Age of comics, taking the fight to the supervillains of the Axis Powers, who end up stealing an atomic bomb and beginning its detonation sequence.  The Legionnaires sacrifice their lives to stop the bomb... and are then transported back into the timestream, safe and sound.  Here we see them trying to figure out how these time slips keep happening to them (this Golden Age adventure wasn't the first), and I love that Brainy is the first to clock that it almost feels like some very powerful entity is deliberately creating these time slips, in order to observe how the Legionnaires react to them (spoiler alert: it's the Time Trapper!).  I also love how Cosmic Boy is immediately frustrated by the notion that he and his team are being used as pawns in someone else's game, even if there's not much he can do about it in the moment.

First off, as a fan of the Legion, where time travel and the timestream have always been a staple, I looooooooove having a page that takes place entirely in the timestream!  And I think it's fantastic that the writers for the Reboot Legion decided to keep the swirling, rainbow colours that had characterized the timestream since the Silver Age.

This is just a great character page, too.  I like that Jeff made sure to include every single Legionnaire involved in the time slip on this page, even if they don't get speaking lines.  The Legionnaires all look fantastic, with this period in the comics being when Jeff had long since hit his stride.  I'm of the opinion it's some of the best Legion art you'll ever see.  Having everyone's hair flowing in the wind (is chronal wind a thing, like solar wind?) was a great choice.  Even though I'd read this comic multiple times before buying the art, it was only when looking at the art itself that I noticed Cosmic Boy starting to fade out of the timestream in panel three.  I love the way Jeff showed his arm becoming transparent.  Cory Carani's inks are especially beautiful on this page, with lots of beautiful taper lines to make his shading more gradual and natural.

One other thing I realized: with the addition of this page to my collection, I now own a full, round dozen of published Moy Legionnaires art!  It's a milestone that's long overdue, if you ask me, considering how much I adore the art from this period.  Now that I've achieved it, I finally feel like I have a good representive sample.

Another very nice page from issue 54! The inks are def great and Shoutout to the colorist as well for the trippy time stream visuals on the color side of the publishing process. Congrats on the dozen page Moy Legion milestone! I'm sure there will be more to come ;)

The colourist for this issue (and most of the Legionnaires comics) is Tom McCraw, who was also the co-plotter for most of the Legion issues he worked on during this period!  I think it's brilliant to have one of the writers be the colourist, because then you know all the colours on the page match exactly what the writer envisioned while dreaming up the story.  I agree that Tom's work on this page is absolutely gorgeous to look at.

And thank you for the congrats!  I really enjoy the feeling that I finally have a good assortment of Legionnaires pages.  I don't plan on stopping anytime soon, so keep a weather eye out!

I was overseas for that one, but Aidan picked up 1 piece for me. I am still awaiting delivery as the USPS has decided to give the package a tour of the US before delivering to me.

I knew Aidan had been buying on your behalf, I just wasn't sure how many were for you!  I'm so sorry to hear the delivery is going sideways.  I hope that it sorts itself out and all works out okay.

I mean, Brainiac 5 with the (chronal) wind in his hair?  Picking up this page was a no-brainer for me.
