Description

Met JK Woodward for the first time late last summer and picked this up from his display. He was very friendly and engaging to talk to. I love his style and the emotion he captures in the characters' expressions which perfectly match the various actors' portrayals. Nearly all his paintings, whether covers or pages are 18x24. The main image above is closer to 11x17. This is the cover for a new trade compilation coming out in October called Star Trek: The Edges of the Final Frontier. Part of IDW's Classic Collections. He told me that he used PhotoShop to compile the final image rather than paiting it all together. I'm sure it gave him more freedom to decide on the final composition as shown below. I didn't know what the final cover looked like until I found the trade annoucement recently.

I have to say that is one beautiful illustration.  Watercolor handled like Gouache.  Painting it as 2 separate parts then putting them together was the way to go.  That cover would sell me.

It is actually gouache, not watercolor, but that isn't an option in the drop down menu, so I wasn't sure what to choose. I just went back and changed it to mixed media since the actual cover he submitted is a blend of painting and digital editing. Great feedback. Thank you!

Separately they are excellent already!  It feels just like a movie poster for an original series event!

Exactly! Thank you! It's been almost 10 months since I bought these and your comment triggered something I forgot to mention above. While reviewing the artwork JK had on his table, these two were side by side and really caught my eye. I was torn which to get. Ultimately I decided to buy the character study as a perfect example of his style. I asked for the price and offered to buy it, and then he added the Enterprise painting saying "these are a set that were combined for the final cover". I did a double take and felt like I got a two for one!
