Description

This Mike Lachlan art is something I probably traded with him in the late 80’s.

Marvel Super Heroes RPG: The Revenge of Kang (1989 TSR) prototype is an Official Advanced Game Adventure #689, features Kang the Conqueror planning an alternate reality in which the Fantastic Four--and other super heroes--were never born or have switched sides and become villains.
Jeff Butler told me that Mike Machlan did prototype images for the annual Random House retail preview catalog, that eventually were the Marvel Super Heroes RPG covers. In this case, Jeff Butler used this image as a starting point and ran with it in his own vision to best represent the final Official Advanced Game Accessory book.

This piece features Kang the Conqueror facing Spider-man, Captain America, Wolverine, Iron-man and Daredevil.
Drawn on 11 1/2" X 14 1/2" 2 ply bristol board.

Mike Machlan (1950 - 2023) was a comic book artist, primarily known for his long career as an inker on series like All-Star Squadron (where he inked his lifelong friend, Jerry Ordway), Infinity, Inc. (a series that he co-created with Ordway and Roy and Dann Thomas), West Coast Avengers (inking Al Milgrom and John Byrne), Amazing Spider-Man (inking Erik Larsen) and Justice Society of America (inking Mike Parobeck).

It reminds me of the cover Jeff Butler did for The Revenge of Kang for the Advanced MSH RPG.  I was just thinking yesterday about a bit of weirdness TSR did with their Forgotten Realms line, with covers that were yanked in various stages of completion and replaced with different pieces by other artists.  I never heard of that happening with the MSH line, but your piece suggests it might not have been immune.

Maybe.  I know Machlan did some TSR with Butler inking him also.

You were correct!
