This recreation is an homage to Herb Trimpe (pencils) and Al Milgrom’s (inks) classic first cover for Marvel’s adaption of the Mattel Toys hit Japanese toy-based Shogun Warriors line from 1978. Roughly 12" x 18" on 2 ply plate finish Bristol board. The actual original cover art was made from a “stat” of the giant robots and city scape which was reduced in size and composited with the other cover elements to produce the final cover with only a very small amount of real art on it. So it was satisfying to make this recreation that contains more actual art than the original camera-ready art did!
This recreation is now owned by the National Toy Museum of Canada and is on display next to their collection of original Shogun Warriors toys from the 1970s. As with all my other recreations this was created by hand with methods as close as possible to how the original was made including using vintage supplies and tools whenever possible. Vintage 1970s ink with sable brushes and technical pens on aged board and reproduction stats with rubber cement staining, editorial markings and more.
Five levels of anti-fraud measures are incorporated into the work as well to deter it from being used in any sort of nefarious way. See my website's "About Recreation" page’s FAQ for more info.
