In a four-page sequence created for the trade paperback, Francesca's mother recalls how the heroine began her test to become the Chosen One. Published in black and white that missed out on the atmospheric sepia coloring. The lush detail of the first panel shows that Taylor had developed as a renderer in the three years since the series ended. Fang: Testament TP, page 35 (2000).
Taylor got his start in the epitomic Bad Girl book Cry For Dawn. But rather than being a bad girl comic, this story, and this sequence in particular, lean heavily into heroic fantasy. Francesca has more in common with Red Sonja than, say, Lady Death. She is on a classic quest to save her people (and later her mother), and is not motivated by revenge or something darker. The eroticism Taylor is known for is apparent, but to me, it doesn't go much farther than what you sometimes saw in Savage Sword of Conan.
