The Atom saves Alexander Graham Bell from being killed by George Henry Corliss' Steam Engine at the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia and returns to present day via the Time Pool. If you look at photos of the actual Corliss Steam Engine, you'll notice that it doesn't look anything like what Steve Stiles drew. I read in an interview with Steve that he couldn't find any reference photos at the time, so he had to wing it.
