So were these backup stories?  When did they start?  I pretty much left the book after Grell stopped drawing it.  So if it started after that issue, I probably missed it.  Also wasn't there a separate Barren Earth title?  My DC history is pretty shabby.

Yep, backup stories drawn by Ron Randall between issues #63-88 (excluding 66,71,75) and concluded later in the 4-issue mini-series "Conqueror of the Barren Earth"

Yeah, Grell had left the title by that time, but continued to do the covers up until #71 when Jurgens took over.

A funny coincidence is that I was the underbidder on this one and I was going after it for the exact reasons you noted in your description!  :)

If you check out the bid history on this auction, you and I are the only two bidders after your June 29 high bid of $16.50!  I am glad we did not run each other up any higher and I'm also glad this little gem did not sell for only $16.50. 

I feel Fred should get somewhat more than his starting bids for these cards and I think you still got this one at a bargain price!  Congratulations again buddy!

Hmm, well, yes and no.  My "comfort zone" for these Hembeck cards is probably $50 or less.  So I'm not sure if I would consider this a bargain, personally.  And this may not be a very popular statement, but while these are highly collectible and desirable pieces, at the same time, we're not exactly talking Ditko or Miller art here.  Also keep in mind that Fred has done hundreds and hundreds of these.  Additionally, while they always say 1 of 1 on the back, he does recycle through the characters and will eventually do some characters over and over again.  I do absolutely agree that he should get more than his minimum starting bids.  But that said, when we start creeping into the $100 range for some of these, that's probably where I back off.  Honestly, if I would have known it was you, I probably wouldn't have gone as high as I did.  But thanks for making me go over my comfort zone buddy.  Maybe I can return the favor someday.  LOL

Ah, once the Fred Hembeck virus enters your system, it's there for all time ... but in a good way!  Not familiar with this character, but I love Fred's portrayal of her.
