Description

This photograph appears to be from Raymond's home in New Rochelle. The book he is holding, interestingly, is Jules Verne's MYSTERIOUS ISLAND. The set of books on the upper left of the shelf have written on the spine, "The New Punch Library" and are shelved out of numerical sequence. Also on the shelves is Robert Louis Stevenson's DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE and books on Nantucket and New Rochelle itself. The photo originates from the historic archive of William Randolph Hearst's San Francisco Examiner newspaper. In addition to being the flagship of Hearst's newspapers, it was his original paper which he took over in 1887, and was the basis for the 1941 Orson Welles film, Citizen Kane. On the verso of the photograph there is a copy of how it was used in the newspaper clipping and has the Examiner date stamp on it. The date stamp indicates it was catalogued for the Examiner's Reference Library on June 25th, 1949.
