HUGE SS comin at you surrounded by villains! What more could you ask for!? My buddy Karl bought this book complete during one of our visits to the Kirby's in Thousand Oaks, CA in the late 80's. We traded it back and forth for a few years before breaking it up later in the 90's. SO glad I hung onto this page. At the time we got it the book included the cover even though it looks to be done by Trimpe.

Interesting set of baddies: Stallior (lower left) Aireo (upper right) and Leonus (lower right) created by Kirby and made their first appearance 18 months earlier in FF 83

Not a bad page by the Surfer's SOLE creator: "I told Jack we needed a character that was like a God. He came back with Galactus and this naked guy on a surf board" -Stan Lee

I think it is the Don Heck inking that is making this piece so popular! Stan Lee is a hack. Are there really people out there who still believe Stan had anything to do with the majority of the forever enduring characters that came from the pencil of Jack Kirby????? Dare I say that Jack Kirby is one of the most influential men of the 20th century?

James, Can't agree more with you. I attended Art & Design in NYC and wanted to be a cartoonist. Jack Kirby and Jack Davis had a major influence on me and I was lucky to work with Jack Davis over the years on projects. Jack Kirby had to beg Stan Lee to help get his original artwork back so he could have a "nest egg" for his family. Jack created so many characters that live on today and still make money and Stan Lee profits for them. Not to say Stan Lee had nothing to do with the comic industry but you would think by by his own PR that he created or had his hand in every Marvel character. At his prime, Jack Kirby researched, created, stylized, wrote and drew most of his comic books. Great piece of art!

I LOVE Stan. He was responsible for ushering in the Marvel age of comics. But, in Stan's own words: "I told Jack we needed a character that was like a God. He came back with Galactus and this naked guy on a surf board" -Stan Lee . Kirby was the SOLE creator of the Silver Surfer AND Galactus"

I love Stan too! And this piece is tremendous, a real museum-quality gem. . . even the title is awe-inspiring-- does he really smash the Inhumans in that issue?!?!? Lemme guess: there was an initial misunderstanding, fists flew, cosmic power-bolts were thrown, then they realized that they were on the same side and united to combat the real threat. . .

I sould tell John Buscema was the best Silver Surfer artist, but as John himself said, "Jack Kirby was the king" ! Everything he drew was filled with power and magic, this piece of art beautifully inked by Herb Trimpe is a masterpiece ! Bravo Jack and félicitations Len.

Hi Len WOW! Man you feel like the Silver surfer is about to burst off this beautiful page & fly right over your head & say "Greetings mortal!" Kirby sure was & still is indeed "THE KING!" Long Live the KING! I know Herb personally, man he's awesome in his own right! In fact Herb just became a grandfather yesterday! His daughter just had a little girl! Wait a minute -- how have I looked at this thing 49,658 times over the last 6 years without noticing there are margin notes beneath the insignia? Any idea what Jack wrote there?

Above the SS stat it says "BESET BY STRANGE TYPE HUMANS" It's back under glass right now but I'll make a scan of the area under the lower stat next time I have it out

CAF is so great--here's a page that's been posted for years and I've never come across it before now. Truly amazing piece--if this was in my collection I'd have to pinch myself on a daily basis to make sure I wasn't dreaming.

This book has now attained mythic and historically important status as Kirby's last, angry work for a Marvel that he felt betrayed and belittled him -- much like the Surfer himself feels about Mankind by the end of this issue. Wonder how Stan felt dialoguing this book... or if he was totally oblivious to Jack's artistic rant? Either way it's a killer splash with killer Trimpe inks to boot!

I always assumed it was solely written by Jack with, maybe, a few "punch ups" by Stan. The story seems to have some similarities to FF 72

Amazing splash, and thanks for the history of the piece in the CAF Featured Art email. Many years ago, I had the Lockjaw page for a while - probably not more than a year or two. Should have hung on to it, but we all say that about everything that had to move on
