Description

Avengers 36, page 15. This is from the first Avengers story I ever read, when it was reprinted in Marvel Triple Action. I must have been seven, and it made a huge impression on me. I remember thinking the story was incredibly intense...The Avengers entering an alien spaceship to rescue a teammate, only to be overwhelmed and picked off one by one by a huge force of Ultroid soldiers. By the end, the heroes had all been captured, and I was sure they'd never get out alive. It may have been my first experience with suspense. And then I didn't find out the conclusion of the story for about ten years! Of course, I read other Avengers comics, so I knew the heroes had survived, but I didn't know how (When I found out, naturally, the answer was a letdown). This is also from my favorite period of the team, membership-wise -- They weren't exactly the most powerful team around, so they always felt like underdogs. This page features my two favorite Avengers, Hawkeye and Goliath, doing their thing, and it also features a classic gaffe -- Hawkeye mistakenly referring to the recently-captured Cap as "web head." Btoom! Btam! I love this page.

I love Don Heck's work during this period. He was very underrated, and in my opinion every bit as good a John Buscema. Great page!

I agree, Hecks line work on these early Avengers books looks far better than the published comics pages with the grainy printing and off center colors. Great Page!
