Two years ago Nick Cardy was one of my convention gets, I had discovered he had illustrated one of my childhood favorites; Tomahawk and thought it might be cool to get Nick to do one. Plus I figured Nick doesn’t get many requests to draw the frontier hero so he might enjoy taking a break from the umpteenth drawing of Wonder Girl or Aquaman. I put the request in and at the close of the convention Nick was not able to get to it. In recent months I noticed that he was no longer talking commissions and did not appear at Mega-Con and assumed wrongly as it turns out, Nick’s health had taken a turn for the worse.
Well one look at Nick this year I was immediately assured that Nick is in fine shape and as sharp and talkative as always. One of my favorite Heroes memories was seeing he and Joe Sinnott a few years back ribbing each other and cracking jokes. I reintroduced Nick to my wife and chatted with Nick, his niece Mary-Ann and later in the day his sister and made the request again. Nick said he would try and get to it and I walked away to the tables with the hope that it would happen this year. On Saturday we were wandering down the aisles and got hailed by Nick, Tomahawk was done and ready to go. To say that I am thrilled that I got Nick to draw one of my favorite childhood characters is an understatement. Just as nice was the time spent with one of the greats of the 50’s 50s and 70s repeatedly throughout the convention. Now if we can only make that dinner with Barry Kitson happen. J
