Description
At the turn of the 20th century, Finland had many politically oriented cartoon magazines. Parties both at the right and the left had them, each with drawings supporting their point of view. Skilled draughtsmen were so few however, that many would get commissions from all over the political spectrum - and many would also accept them. Hjalmar Lofving (1896-1968) was one such artist, drawing left and right already in the teens (both his and the century's!).
This drawing from 1921 is interesting in that political sense. Finland had a traumatic civil war in the spring of 1918 between the "reds" and the "whites". The reds lost and thousands of them were executed or starved at prison camps in the bloody aftermath. This drawing is done only three years after those awful events, and is clearly depicting a red soldier. There's no indication anywhere what this drawing was used for: was it done for publication (doesn't really look like that) or as a private commission, or just a gift to a friend? If it has been presented as a piece of art for display on a wall, it's interesting to see that as early as 1921, Lofving has boldly chosen to work in a cartoon style, very close to his published work of the same period.
