DescriptionA few months after puberty started, I traded one of two computer-generated pictures of Alfred E. Neuman that Pop brought home for some comics a friend had. One of them was Archie Giant Series #26, Betty and Veronica Spectacular. This issue was special and, as far as I know, unique in that every main page was a pin up of Betty, Veronica or both. I promptly (gasp) disassembled the whole issue and plastered my room with the pictures. These were my first girlie pin ups. After I discovered Ebay, I was looking for a copy of that comic when I typed in “Betty Veronica” and found a routine original art page by Dan Parent, the first original art comic book page I had ever seen for sale. I got it for just over $10.00, probably slightly high for what it was, but a fraction of what I had assumed was the going rate for original comic pages. I immediately started trolling for other original art and haven’t stopped. Soon, I settled down into a collector of mostly pin up style pictures and I thought getting an original page from Archie Giant #26 would be the best. I figured, however, that they, like most art of the time, got destroyed. Then pages started popping up. I lost the first to someone on the floor of Heritage, the second to some high roller who had zero feedback, but finally won the one you see here. It is doubly significant, part of my first pin up set and part of the issue that got me started in original comic art. It also happens to be one of only three pages I specifically remembered from way back then (though, in my memory, both B and V were cheerleaders). This is also a rarity in that it is a published Dan DeCarlo picture of Veronica as a cheerleader. I hear that this costume is much requested for commissions, but, since neither B or V were cheerleaders, it hardly ever was done in real life. Truly a grail. Social/Sharing |
