Description
In its day, L'il Abner was the most popular comic strip in the world and is, to my knowledge, the only funny strip from the 1930's and 40's and maybe 50's to be comprehensively reprinted in the 90's and 2000's. Sharp satire, imaginative stories, dynamic writing, engaging characters and eye-catching art all combined to make this a classic. Al Capp, it's creator was, at his peak, a celebrity unmatched by any comic artist or writer active today. This page, which features Abner's hottie girlfriend Daisy Mae comes from this period. Daisy has not yet pulled her hair out of its braid and into the glamour girl curls that later became her trademark, but the she has taken on the stylized face, the almost-falling-off-her skimpy top and short shorts. She later married Abner but is, at this point still the rural virgin pining for her hillbilly hunk. Capp later used Frank Frazetta as a ghost. A Frazetta-era Abner costs about twice what this one did.
