What can I say? It's an Art Adams cover with BWS inks. If that wasn't enough, it's an X-Men cover for goodness sake! It just doesn't get any better. The first time I showed Arthur this cover, he admitted to me that it was sort of a rush job for him as he was under the deadline gun. Of course he had no idea that Barry was going to ink it until AFTER he saw the finished piece. Needless to say, he wished he'd done a better job. I don't know about any of you, but if this is what Arthur considers a BAD job, I don't think my heart could take a good one! :) One of THE EIGHT, you'll find some of the others elsewhere in my gallery! Thanks Lance!

(2/11/06) Just got back from WonderCon 2006 where I picked up a copy of MODERN MASTERS #6, ARTHUR ADAMS and was delighted to see this piece included among the featured artwork. Very cool.

I bought this comic when it first came out and ever since I wondered who it was drawn by. There's no signature, and it looked equal parts Art Adams and BWS. Little did I know that it was both of them. Thanks for giving the answer to an eighteen year old mystery!

Art Adams and BWS! That's not fair! WOW! This is definitely one of my favorite X-Men covers.

Okay, this is going to sound weird. When I gave BWS some books to sign for me, I asked if he could sign them on the cover so I could display them. This was one of the books I sent, since Barry did the artwork. When I got my books back all were signed on the cover...except this one. It was signed on the inside with a note attached that reads "Signed inside-BWS didn't draw this cover." Huh? This cover screams Art Adams on Dazzler and BWS on Storm...to me at least. I still say he drew Storm but maybe Art can verify this for me.

That's EXACTLY what I thought Jerry! It's what immediately came to mind the first time I saw the comic, and seemed to be confirmed when I acquired the original art. I always knew Barry INKED the whole thing, but I suspected he might have had a bigger hand in rendering the Storm figure. Then, I discovered Arthur's prelim to this cover and what do you know, the Storm looks exactly like this in the prelim too! So I guess Barry was pretty faithful to the pencils when he inked it. In a weird way, I was sort of disappointed when I saw that. Always felt that Barry had more of an influence on how this turned out. Then again, maybe Arthur was just channeling Barry when he drew it. Since he knew Barry was doing the interiors.

I own the penciled prelim. It looks EXACTLY like the published piece and is signed by Arthur Adams. Maybe BWS just lightboxed the prelim and inked it??? I dunno. But, I find it odd that BWS would not sign the piece as being "his".

You can't really see it from this scan, but the upper portion of this cover (above Storm's head) is all un-inked pencils. Probably because Barry knew that's where the logo would go and didn't bother to waste time inking something that would be covered up. So there are definitely Adams pencils under the Smith inks. This cover was NOT lightboxed.

HA! Sorry buddy, no blue! There's a lot of regular graphite pencil work above Storm's head, but not a single blue line. But hey, who am I to turn down a free scan?

Thanks to the shout out from your buddy Joe L (who mentioned that this nice cover was in your gallery), I decided to find this in your amazing gallery. Adams and Windsor-Smith have rather complimentary styles and this cover shows that off to great effect. But no comment to this cover would be complete without a nod to those wonderful 80s / 90s colors (bright purple and teal - yeah!). Popular back then, but today would cost a colorist his job. That's why I love the black and white. Timeless and beautiful. Congratulations on this great one of the eight!

HA! Yeah, those are pretty gaudy colors! Never really gave it much thought, but now that you mention it.......

I frankly forgot this cover when it was published and I'm really surprised about it. It's so weird and so good the combination of styles of AA & BWS. I'm Ororized!

Well, I do have a Wrightson piece inked by Mignola that's pretty cool.  But you're right, Adams and BWS on the same cover is tough to beat.  Thanks for the comment AB.

How is it possible that I have not commented on this masterpiece by two geniuses?  Museum quality!

Thank you my friend.  I did not think it could get any better than having two of my favorites (Adams and Mignola) on a piece, but havings an Adams with BWS inks is more than I could have ever dreamed of.  Now if I can just find an Art Adams inked by Kevin Nowlan.  My life would be complete.  LOL

I always knew this was Smith because his inking style is so distinct, but never realized Art Adams also drew it- what a unique collaboration by two contemporary masters!

Thanks Bill.  I think most would agree with you that the Smith inks are pretty easy to spot.  But also, for me at least, that Dazzler figure just screams Art Adams.  Anyway, really appreciate the comment.  Take care and stay safe.

Thanks Mark.  You know, people are constantly telling me that I have way too much stuff and I need to pare my collection down.  I'm not an advocate of collectin size limits, but whenever I get one of these "how did I miss this one" comments, I can't help but wonder if that's the reason.  I know it's a lot of stuff to wade through.  Sometimes I almost feel like apologizing.  But you know what?  If you don't roll up your pants and start wading, you'd never stumble upon pieces like this one.  Anyway, glad you found it eventually.  Appreciate the comment as always buddy!

Don't know why I never commented on this one, but wow, that's a cool cover! BWS's inks really make Arthur's pencils pop! Must be even more gorgeous in person!

Great BWS inks, with the flowing hair and vibrant background really making this image move. It's interesting to see the uninked section of the explosive background as well, to see that BWS chose not to give those energy waves an embossed shadow effect. A very rare thing, this.

If I had to guess (and this is certainly pure speculation on my part) I would think that Barry was well enough aware of the impending logo and cornerbox placement, so thought better of wasting the time and effort to ink that upper portion.  If you look in the Additional Images, you'll see that those lines didn't even make the published cover.
