Karate Kid vs. The Hulk by Phil Hester, Ande Parks and Simon Gough

The first time I saw Phil Hester's work was in Swamp Thing #140 (written by Grant Morrison & Mark Millar), and while I thought it was decent art, I wasn't blown away. I now think it was the inks which didn't agree with Phil's pencils, because years later when I saw Phil's art again in Ultimate Team-Up and Green Arrow, this time inked by Ande Parks, I WAS blown away. Ande is the perfect inker for Phil, and I was happy when Phil agreed to do this commission and then said he'd get Ande to ink it. And these two aren't just talented artists, either. They both write as well, and they're both very good at it. Check out The Wretch or Union Station for some fine stories from them. Anyway, this piece is glorious in its awesomeness. The Hulk is huge and Val looks like the agile fighter that he should be. I also love the rocks and blocks around them.

Some may think Val Armorr is running away in this drawing, but oh no, he is spinning a big kick into the Hulk's neck which I'm sure will put him down for the fight. Either that, or it will piss the Hulk off and ONLY THEN will Val run away. But that's okay, because later when the Hulk changes back to Banner, Val will take him out with one blow. So, nah!

If you like this piece then go buy some books featuring Phil's work and while you're at it buy some books featuring Ande's work.

Hester is awesome and this piece is cool, inked perfectly. Got to interview Phil for CAF and he's a good guy. This is a real nice Hulk.

I think kicking the Hulk in the neck is more likely to piss him off than put him down, and really, if the Hulk lands even a glancing blow this fight is over. That said, this is a great piece in a gallery that's a lot of fun.
