Description
DC keeps its flagship characters apart. Most of us are aware of the number of times Superman had raced with the Flash. But how often does Superman battle or join forces with Green Lantern? I would estimate that they do so on average once every 10 years. Comic art legend John Byrne followed up his definitive runs on Marvel's Uncanny X-Men and Fantastic Four by completely rebooting Superman following the Crisis on Infinite Earths. Setting a new, groundbreaking status quo, Byrne redefined the Man of Steel for a new era. Absolutely iconic shot of both heroes as they fly through space. Rarely will you see an example of Byrne's Superman that can compare to this piece. So one can imagine the response when this page popped up on eBay. Originally I thought this masterpiece would be beyond my means. Still I decided to put in a bid during the last few seconds. Luck urged me to add $200 more to my maximum bid, without which this gem would be in somebody else’s collection.

Byrne's pencils looked great during this period and Kessel's inks were a good match. And, hey, Byrne's reboot might not have been perfect, but it gave the character a new energy and direction that carried him for 20-plus years and gave us, at least initially, some really cool art (like this great title splash, for instance). Congrats!

I agree with Tim - while Byrne is my favorite inker on Byrne, Kesel is a close second. Awesome splash!!
