Ernest H. Shepard illustration 1933

Ernest H. Shepard (1879-1976) did drawings for Punch for fifty years, becoming a staff cartoonist in 1921 and serving as the lead cartoonist from 1945 to 1954.
In the late 1920s and early 30s, he illustrated a series of abridged volumes of British non-fiction classics: Everybody's Pepys (1926), Everybody's Boswell (1930) and Everybody's Lamb (1933). This drawing is from the third one, titled "Such frigid difference".
Everything else Shepard did in his long career, however, was overshadowed by another series of books he illustrated around the same time: When We Were Very Young (1924), Winnie The Pooh (1926), The House at Pooh Corner (1928) and The Wind in the Willows (1931).
In his old age Shepard grew to resent the fact that his children's book drawings became much more widely known than his more 'serious' work - to the extent that when The Political Cartoon Gallery in London put up an exhibition of Shepard's editorial art in 2006, they called it "The Man Who Hated Pooh".
Upon his death, Shepard was described by art historian Bevis Hillier as "the end of a tradition. (...) He is the last of the great Victorian 'black and white' men".
