Muth's art on this series was lovely and lyrical.
I know absolutely nothing about this title and am thankful Bill featured this in the daily CAF email so I could be educated. This is such a cool and fascinating piece to look at. Agree on your comment of great use of neutral colors. This so feels like it should be a cover. It is a fabulous full page splash for sure! Great pickup. Congrats!
Hi David. First of all, thanks for the comment. As this book is probably about as far from Batman as it gets, I don't imagine you would have stumbled upon it if it had not been a CAF feature piece, so I am immensely grateful for that. Very east for worthwhile artwork to get lost on such a massive site. Certainly I feel this work deserves to be seen, so again, thanks for stopping by and thanks for the nice comment.
Funny you should mention the covers. My initial plan was to snatch up all the covers early on. But if you look at them online, you'll see that each cover (except for the last issue) is done in two large panels. I had hoped that each panel was its own separate piece and only joined digitally for printing. But when I saw one of the originals, I learned that this was how they were actually painted. Not being a big fan of split or multiple panel covers, I decided instead to go after all the splashes (or at least all the splashes that were a single image). As such, I'm inclined to agree with you about this being a cover. In a way, that's how I look at all the splashes from this book. Anyway, thanks again for the very kind comment.
Fascinating artist!!
I was very happy to see this gem spotlighted in today's CAF update! Your Moonshadow collection is second to none and this splash is my personal favorite! I love the graceful pose of the boy in the foreground and how the elegant use of white makes the character stand out from the dark backgrounds. Of course, the black cat in the upper left corner is the icing of this tasty piece of cake!
Thanks Jim! Of course you should also be congratulated for being the only person who managed to get me to part with one of the splashes from my collection. But I know it's in a good home with someone who treasures it, so no regrets on my part. And, of course, I"m still enjoying the Kirby. LOL
