Description

What '60s kid didn't dig Hammer horror movies, and especially the ones with Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing? This nifty illustration by Bruce Timm might've made a nice spot illo for a TV Guide article on a Hammer retrospective or anniversary. But actually, it appeared in the premiere Hammer fanzine, Little Shoppe of Horrors, as part of a tribute to director Terence Fisher.

Frankenstein and the Monster From Hell (1974) was the sixth and final installment in the studio's popular Peter Cushing Frankenstein series. Peter is caricatured here by Bruce as the infamous Baron, with David Prowse cast as the Creature. Prowse, of course, attained fame with roles in Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange and then as Darth Vader's physical presence in Star Wars.

Peter Cushing made a terrific Baron in this entertaining offering, as usual. Peter looked quite ill and emaciated and gaunt and near the end of life in the film, which makes it poignant to watch and bittersweet. Regardless, he brought a cool intensity and self-righteous mania to the character and his obsession with creating life, as always. He was equally great as Abraham Van Helsing in Hammer's Dracula films, opposite Christopher Lee.
