DescriptionThis was created in very early 1964 as a prototype for a set of Marvel stamps. If you look at my gallery you will see a reference scan of the entire sheet which included 36 stamps. If you look very carefully, and embiggen this image, you can see what appears to be light pencil underneath the inks, and the pencil appears to be a better image. At least the eyelets are correct. Not sure why Marie Severin, whose work is attributed to this piece, didn't get Spidey right. But then I am not sure why so many other Marvel artists in the early 60s couldn't get Spidey right for his guest appearances. So, maybe this was her very first time drawing Spidey and she used one of the bizarrely awful renderings by Kirby or Ayers as her guide in drawing this. She definitely got better at drawing him over time. Social/Sharing |
