DescriptionThis original for the first daily Li'l Abner strip was given by the syndicate to an artist hired to be Al Capp's assistant. After he used it as a model for drawing the characters, it was stashed away for over 60 years. Daisy Mae did not appear until the third strip.Note that Al Capp was using a different spelling for his last name, Cap, in signing the earliest strips. As Chic Young had done on his first original for the Blondie series, Capp wrote the number 1 in the final panel, just below his signature, to indicate that this strip should be printed first each time a new newspaper started to publish the Li'l Abner strip. Most living Americans, including myself, have little idea just how popular and culturally influential Li'l Abner was at the height of Capp's abilities as draftsman and writer. While it is certainly not my favorite strip to read, it has been argued by others that it was perhaps the most important of all 20th century comic strips. If you question the impact on American culture, just take a look at the article on Li'l Abner on Wikipedia (with which I, in all my self-interest, had NO involvement whatsoever). Social/Sharing |

Wow - what a jaw-dropping collection you've got! You should open your own museum. I'm both awed and inspired.
