DescriptionI've been looking for a good example of Leonard Starr's work on his classic long-running strip On Stage, and this one caught my eye with several nice close-ups, great period hair and dress, flamboyant linework, and about as much action as this story ever delivered. The heroine of the daily (if not the entire story) savagely clobbers her would be captor, as he rightly deserves, but then immediately shows him tenderness, relieved that he survived the smackdown. I really love the wild-eyed central panel with a partially visible swaying beaded curtain (thanks Marcus!) to add to the vertigo-inducing scene. Lots of wonderful textures in each panel, and so much emotion in this daily! Starr initiated the strip in 1957, and this example came out in 1979, the final year he worked on it. Starr clearly wanted to get the violent action just right, and wound up patching the first panel to do so; the glue stain is not as noticeable in person as it is in my scan, but I'm always fascinated by the artist's process in any case. Thanks for taking a look! Social/Sharing |

I'd like to smack Tucker up the noggin' a few times too if I could get away with it. Starr on this is series brings the glamor good girl look of the day. It does show those late 70's touches like the hairstyles, coats, and the beaded curtain on the top right of the center panel.

Beaded curtain is right! I'll modify my description accordingly... My favorite late 70s touch is the dude's shirt collar, period coat, wooly lid, and facial hair. Cassie has a vintage late 70s Breck Girl 'do, but I think she looks dynamite in a way that would blend in well enough in 2023

Lovely strip with an exquisite linework, somehow reminiscent of Alex Raymond. That middle panel is fantastic!

I love On Stage, it's my favourite strip, though I generally stop at collecting the dailies after 1968, as I felt the quality of Starr's art took a step down after that and Mary herself was always quite ugly looking with her terrible hairstyle and all the awful 70's clothing. However, every now and then I do see a really exceptional example from the 70's and this is one of those. It's really fantastic, congrats, man!

That right panel with the shadow cast against the wall just really adds such a highlight to this!

Beautiful example of the On Stage comic strip. Leonard Starr's work here is gorgeous. Nice action scene and multiple panels of the glamorous women Starr was so good at drawing. Fantastic inks as well! Great pick-up!
