Description

From Shonen 'Special Edition Tantei Book' (08/1957). This seems to have been a one-off short story & not a series. For me this splash exemplifies my earliest (chidhood) impressions of Japanese comics as a weird mix of explosive fantastic adventure and Disney-esque rendering. Of course the term I was looking for was "Tezuka," but even now I am only beginning to grapple with his primacy.

Always glad to help out a "fellow traveler." I think your eye was quite good on this one. I don't think it was done by Fujiko Fujio's studio, but it is a fantastic example of the kinds of "old school" manga that were produced in the wake of Tezuka's groundbreaking "New Treasure Island" series.

This is quite wonderful Aaron, from that great use of blacks, right down to the subtle watercolor. Congrats!

Very nice piece of Manga Art drawn by Suzuki Mitsuaki and published in Shonen 'Special Edition Tantei Book' (08/1957) ... I love it, the color makes it beautiful
