COMIC ART (HORROR) COMPLETE STORY - THE UNEXPECTED #122 "LADY KILLER"

The great Murphy Anderson drew this complete four-page story for DC's The Unexpected. The story is called "Ladykiller" and it tells the tale of a man who romances a woman after hours in a department store, with the not so unexpected twist that he's actually lost his mind and is in love with a mannequin. Anderson was a top artist at DC from the early 50s through the early 70s. Before the superhero boom of the 1960s, Anderson drew many science fiction stories for Strange Adventures and Mystery in Space. He only did a handful of stories for DC's mystery line in the early 1970s, so this is a rare complete story by the artist from this era. The Unexpected was a DC mystery anthology title. It began as Tales of the Unexpected, a science fiction, fantasy and mystery anthology series published from 1956 to 1968 for 104 issues. It was then renamed The Unexpected, which focused on mystery/horror tales, and it ran until issue #222 in 1982. Murphy Anderson was a legendary artist at DC known for his high quality late Golden Age and Silver Age work on such features as Captain Comet, the Atomic Knights, Hawkman, Spectre, the Doctor Fate/Hourman issues of Showcase, #55 and #56 and the Starman/Black Canary issues of Brave and the Bold, #61 and #62. He co-created and designed the popular character Zatanna for a story in Hawkman #4 (1964). Anderson started his career in 1944 working for Fiction House. He began a working relationship with DC editor Julie Schwartz in the early 1950s that lasted for over 20 years. In the early 70s, Anderson teamed up with penciler Curt Swan to create the quintessential Superman art of the era. The melding of the team, which became known as "Swanderson", remains a highlight of its time period.
