2011 Joe SInnott Inking Challenge: Namor the Sub-mariner

The Inkwell Awards conceived of the Inking Challenge in 2009, the concept being that inkers would work on the same pencil art as bluelines and subsequently post it in the IA CAF gallery for education purposes (part of their mission statement) through visual comparison of the before and after artwork, in order to highlight what the inkers bring to the table in such a collaboration. Then the art would be auctioned off for fundraising for Inkwell operating expenses. Bob Almond was inspired by Steve Morger's annual Super-Con (now the Big Wow Comicfest) annual Inking Panel where the idea first sprung as an event at the show, and he was given permission to run with it. Originally, the committee considered Dave Simons, who had just passed away that summer while a committee member, and his pencil art for the project. But ultimately, The Dave Simons Inkwell Memorial Scholarship Fund for students at the Joe Kubert School was created in his name and memory and instead Joe Sinnott was attached to the Inking Challenge, since he was the organization's Hall of Fame award category namesake and better recognized for his contributions to the art form over the decades. After gaining permission and support from Joe, and utilizing two pencil-only scans of his art (Namor & Dr. Doom) previously donated on blank variant sketch covers and enlarging it. The committee finally got around to activating the challenge in December of 2010 with intent for the funds being raised to pay for their first live ceremony at Heroes Con in June 2011. Various notable ink artists ranging from the legends of the silver-age, to the vets of the bronze-age, to the hot shots of the present, were all invited to participate and many were eager to approach the challenge of inking Joltin' Joe, but none more so than he himself!
