Pryde of the X-men was a 22 minute cartoon animated by TOEI, a Japanese animation company, that was commissioned by Marvel in 1988 when the X-men's previous cartoon debut, in Spider-man and His Amazing Friends (A Firestar is Born which was also animated by TOEI) left fans wanting more. Pryde of the X-men, which was influenced by issues #129–139 of Uncanny X-Men, served as a pilot to 1992's X-men: The Animated Series and spawned the X-men Arcade game by Konami. It only existed in VHS form, having never been brought to DVD or HD so only grainy copies of the cartoon exist.
Many of the painted animation cels from the show that survived are notorious for having really bad line fading, a product of the Japanese ink that was used which wasn't meant to last because cels weren't seen as art. These pencil cel drawings, which were the basis for the painted cels, is where the real art is since they were drawn by the actual animators while the cel paintings were painted by anyone available. In fact, many of the pencil cel drawings in my collection have the production number circled which means they're "Key" drawings, done by senior animation staff while the non-circled were done by "in-between" artists and are gorgeously detailed as well.
