Finnish art - Jyka & Rike
Jyrki "Jyka" Paavola (b. 1944) and Risto "Rike" Nurisalo (b. 1941) are a pioneering duo of Finnish cartoonists. They have been doing the longest running cartoon feature in Finnish history, the gag panel page Puutaheinaa ("Balderdash"), since 1965. In the 70s, they did a B.C.-inspired comic strip (that later turned into a magazine page) called "Runteli", that was already on the way to land a syndication deal in the States, but eventually the pair turned the offer down. The majority of Jyka & Rike's gags are based on Finnish puns, so it's questionable how they would've been able to make their series work in English. On all their work, Jyka does the writing and preliminary sketching, and Rike does the finished drawings. Rike Nurisalo had a day job running the graphics department of the Finnish TV2 in Tampere for nearly forty years. In the early 90s that merged with his cartoon work, when he drew T-shirts and other products for the tv comedy team Kummeli.
