CAROL DAY - Jack Slingsby (COMPLETE STORY)

‘London…summer…’ And so begins the twenty-seventh storyline, entitled Jack Slingsby, from David Wright’s masterpiece, Carol Day. In this very personal story for David Wright, Carol’s fiancée Joe Wilson has to go to Paris for a photo shoot, and while he is away Carol falls in love with Jack Slingsby, a struggling artist married to Iris Slingsby, an old school friend of Carol’s. The gist of the story is that Carol decides to have an affair with a married man, notwithstanding friendships and fiancées. She’s a far cry from the coquettish ingénue from the early Lance Hallam storyline who unwittingly gets pulled into an affair with a married man. And, unlike the successful entrepreneur in the character of Lance Hallam, Jack’s a lazy slacker who drives his wife crazy by refusing to work and help take care of their bills. It’s a pretty interesting story for a serialized strip in 1964 – the feature character, a woman, decides to trash her pending nuptials to a successful career man to engage in a fling with a slacker artist? Wow. Not exactly Doris Day. I have the good fortune of posting the entire story to this special ‘Carol Day – Jack Slingsby’ gallery. As you’ll see, in several cases the dialog balloons on the original boards are slightly damaged, but they do nothing to detract from the art - and the art will help you fill in any blanks, anyway. I’ve mentioned before that a pet peeve of many serious Carol Day collectors is that everyone generally likes the beginning of the story and the later parts of the story are looked down upon artistically in comparison. Taking a look at these examples from Jack Slingsby should cure anyone of such an erroneous conclusion!
