Walter Simonson

I went through a big superhero phase as a teenager. It peaked just around the time Walter Simonson was doing his run on the Fantastic Four. He became my favorite superhero comics illustrator. I've never been able to put my finger on exactly what in his work appeals to me so much. Something about the strong sense of design he brings into his work, both in his layouts and in his way of drawing characters, and the wonderful liveliness of his inkline. His drawings generate a visceral impact that I've felt looking at his work ever since.
