Kari Suomalainen 1970s
Kari Suomalainen (1920-99) was Finland's most famous political cartoonist, known as Kari. His cartoons appeared daily in Helsingin Sanomat from 1951 to 1991 and they became popular throughout the nation. While most of them comment on current politics, some are based on everyday life. Suomalainen received many awards for his work, including the National Cartoonist Society (US) award in 1959. Kari donated most of his drawings and paintings (circa 9000 artwork, 90++% from his production) to Visavuori foundation in 1988. Just like Carl Giles (from UK), he donated some artwork for friends and for the persons he draw into his daily cartoons. It was merit to be in his cartoon, and get that original artwork, many politicians wished it would happen for them. There is designed exhibition hall in Visavuori where part of these artwork is exhibited. This building was named Kari's Pavilion and was opened in 1990. I have collected his originals since late 1980s and this collection is the biggest private collection now. I am updating it regularly, stay tuned ;-)
