A little more than a decade ago, I decided to get on Dave's list every year at SDCC and have him do me a Universal Monster. I'd commissioned him to do a few others previously (Death, Sandman—like everyone else,) and although I got a few good ones, I could tell that he was tired of drawing Death repeatedly. The key, I thought, was to get him drawing stuff no one else would ask for, so I started this theme. Dave loves silent films, Nosferatu, the Golem, Chaplin, and more— we'd talked about this before. So I knew he'd go at the Universal Monsters with care. He's never considered these SDCC commissions representative pieces of his. I still think many are great, but he looks at them as minor pieces—things he did to pay his expenses at Comic-Con. A few of these have been printed elsewhere-- in books and magazines. Some I have put on my Instagram accounts. And now they live here for the time being.
