Pantheon
Back in the late 90s, just as I started collecting comic art, my interest in comics themselves began to wane. I knew some folks who refused to believe this, insisting there was always a variety of material out there for everyone. Such wasn’t the case for me, and I thought I might get out of comics altogether. Then I stumbled onto the first three issues of Pantheon in a back issue bin, not long after they were released. I remembered being intrigued by the Previews listing for the first issue, and I picked them up. I was hooked, pure and simple. It took a very long time for the series to be completed, but it was the only comic I was buying, and at times my quest to collect it bordered on the ludicrous. Still, it was worth the payout, with an ending one of my friends would call “Totally Dula,” to say nothing of two moments written as though Willingham knew about a plot I had for a Kobold in a D&D campaign that I’d never used. Obviously, I kept going with comics after the series ended, but it really was the only reason I didn’t give up on comics from the late 90s to early 2000s. When Bill Williams put up a collection of pages he inked on E-Bay while the series was going I snapped all save two or three. Only a handful of artists worked on Pantheon. A number of years ago I reached out to one of them. We came to an agreement on price for the remaining pages he had from the series, I asked him how I should send payment, and then he went silent. That kind of thing has happened to me several times, so it wouldn’t be noteworthy, except he’d still talk to me on social media on other topics, but would always go silent when I brought up the pages. I never could figure out if he decided to keep the pages and was afraid I’d flip out if he said so, or if someone came along at the same time and offered a better price. Either way it was disappointing.
