The 1980s saw a number of European–Japanese collaborations on tv animation (typically European source material and Japanese animation), several of them becoming iconic childhood tv memories for my generation in Northern Europe. The first one of these in my memory is The Wonderful Adventures of Nils (Holgersson) (1980, first broadcast in Finland 1983–84) based on the Swedish book by Selma Lagerlöf. The series featured a very catchy theme tune by Karel Svoboda and I guarantee it's instantly triggered in the minds of every Finn my age seeing these originals.
