While Whelan is probably best known, and rightfully so, for his work on so many 70s and 80s fantasy and sci-fi book covers, I was drawn to his horror covers, particularly for HP Lovecraft. His illustrations introduced me to the dark eldritch mysteries of the Necronomicon and Cthulhu Mythos.
