Phil is one of my favorite painters. I love his figurative work. He paints a piece many times before he finally arrives at his finish. Many don't know this. In fact, many here on CAF think they have finished Hale paintings, but they really have prelims. Those prelims in many cases look as good as a finish. Some are almost identical to the published painting so it's hard to tell. Phil certainly sees the difference-- when I asked him why he does so many, he told me he needs to "Learn the painting." If published pieces are your thing, be careful out there. Know what you are buying. Ask around.
